If you have been on a diet before, or if you ask someone who has, you probably know that the most difficult part of the plan is learning how to stop food cravings! Whether you’re a fan of potato chips or a lover of chocolate, everyone has a weakness for a food which is prohibited by most diets. But not all of the cravings you experience are irrational. And you may be even more surprised to know that you do not need to cut out your favorite foods in order to lose weight. Many diets are unsuccessful because people are unable to stick to a diet of bland and boring food. Perhaps it is time to rethink what it means to watch what you eat.
Understanding Cravings So You Can Learn How To Stop Food Cravings
Many people struggle with diets entirely because of food cravings. These appear to be irrational desires to eat food which is typically bad for you. Some people crave sweets, while others may crave salty foods. Your cravings may also be more specific and cause you to want a cheeseburger or chocolate cake. However, once you study your cravings, you may begin to see that they are not entirely irrational at all.
Your brain does not desire foods unless it has a reason to. That reason may simply be the brain working as you have programmed it. If it is used to eating unhealthy food, it may crave those foods when you stop eating them. But that isn’t the only kind of craving you may experience.
Rational cravings occur very commonly with pregnant women. While the food they crave may seem a bit irrational, it is based in very real needs for the body. A pregnant woman may crave something salty such as potato chips. But this isn’t just because chips taste good. A low volume of blood during pregnancy may cause the brain to signal her for sodium. A craving for pickles, one of the most common pregnancy cravings, may indicate a vitamin K deficiency. Vitamin K is essential to bone health and many women experience a lack of vitamin K during pregnancy, which may lead to bone loss.
You may experience similar cravings on a regular basis; pregnancy simply puts these cravings into overdrive. You should never just dismiss your body’s signals as irrational hungers. They may often be signals that you have a deficiency of some kind that you need to address.
What My Body Wants
Your body may be telling you exactly what it is you need. But if you are not accustomed to getting your nutrition from healthy sources, your body may be substituting junk food for healthy foods in order to get what you need. What your body wants is always directly related to what your body needs. But the signals can be very confusing and easy to cross.
Your body is always striving to achieve a balance. But if you get most of your nutrition from sources high in saturated fats, your body may end up craving those sources. This can mean you are consuming a lot of fats in order to get a relatively small amount of actual nutrients. You body knows what it wants, but it may not always know what to avoid. You are responsible for knowing what it is your body needs.
What My Body Needs
Your body can only tell you so much. It is up to you to interpret the signals it gives you and treat your body well. Many people do not consider what their signals mean and simply eat what they crave. But when you learn to analyze your cravings, you will begin to understand why your body wants what it wants. When you figure that out, you only need some basic nutritional knowledge to know what to give it.
If you prepare in advance and make sure you have plenty of good nutritional foods on hand, you may be able to get rid of your cravings in a much healthier way. When you begin craving sweets or candies, your blood sugar may be low. In this case, a juice such as orange juice could provide a healthy substitute. And if you eat these healthy substitutes often enough, there is no reason you cannot indulge yourself every once in a while.
If you take the time to understand your body, you will find sticking to healthy eating habits much easier. But if you don’t know what your body needs, you will struggle to hold to healthier habits. By knowing what your body is craving, you can substitute a healthy food which gives you the nutrients, rather than resorting to junk food. Although it may take some time for you to completely understand your body and to learn how to stop food cravings, you will find living healthy is much easier when you do. You may find that maintaining a healthy weight is much simpler when you strive to live in harmony with your body.
